History of Russia-
Russia has a chequered history. The tribes of Eastern Slavs were the ancient ancestors of Russia. The first known East Slavic state was founded by Prince Rurik. It was called Kievan Rus.
In 13th century, Kievan Rus’ was attacked and captured by Mongols. Under Mongols a small regional center Moscow developed rapidly. In 1682 tsar Peter started to reign in Russia. .Peter the Great brought about the development of Russia. During his rule Russia became powerful state armed with modern institutions and technologies. In 1721 Peter declared Russia an Empire and became the Emperor.
The 20th century Russia lost the war against Japan. The consequences led to numerous riots and strikes all over Russia. After the First World War the situation worsened and the situation was used by the Bolsheviks. Led by the charismatic leader Vladimir Lenin the Bolsheviks revolted on October 25th, 1917. After four more years of Civil war Bolsheviks got control of the whole of Russia.
After the death of Lenin, Stalin became the head of the Communist party and the state and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics was proclaimed.
Like Stalin other leaders followed his ideas and developed the army and sciences to serve the needs of the army. Kruschev, Brezhnev, Andropov, and Gorbachov headed the union of states. However during Gorbachav’s tenure the republics of USSR broke up into smaller countries.
Geography of Russia-
Northern Russian extends into the Arctic Circle and consists primarily of tundra and forests, with thousands of lakes. The Ural Mountains cover 2,500 miles of eastern Russia. The Caucasus Mountains cross the southern part of Russia. The Altai range is found in southern Siberia. The Kamchatka Mountains stretch along the Pacific coast.
Russia boasts of 120,000 rivers. The majority of all local rivers are located in the Arctic Ocean basin. The Amur, Anadyr, Penzhina and some other rivers flow into the Pacific Ocean. The Don, Kuban and Neva rivers flow into the seas bordering the Atlantic Ocean. Russia’s most important river, the Volga, flows all the way to the Caspian Sea.
Russia has very rich mineral resources. Russia produces 17 per cent of the world's crude oil, 25 to 30 per cent of the world’s natural gas, 6 per cent of bituminous coal, 17 per cent of commercial iron ore and 10 to 20 per cent of all non-ferrous, rare and noble metals mined across the globe.
Weather in Russia-
The only two seasons in Russia are summer and winter is the only two seasons. The intervals of moderation between them are very short. As Russia is not much exposed to ocean influences, most of the country receives low to moderate amounts of precipitation.
