Earlier the design of the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, Kaliningrad reflected Neo-classical style and Freemasonic symbolism. Later the new conservative Tsar did not appreciate the style and appointed an architect of his choice named Konstantin Thon to chalk out a new plan for the cathedral. The interiors were adorned with the exquisite artistic works of prominent Russian painters such as Vasily Surikov, Ivan Kramskoi and Vasily Vereshchagin.

The church features a two-leveled gallery, the walls of which were encrusted in marble, granite and other expensive stones. The ground floor was turned into a memorial in the honor of Russia’s victory over Napoleon.

Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, Kaliningrad is planned simply on contemporary lines of the Russo-Byzantine style of art and architecture. This style was quite in vogue in the Imperial Russia. At present, the structure of the cathedral features a height of about seventy meters. There is a small chapel made of wood near this cathedral.

Apart from a religious connotation, the structure of the cathedral reflects unique artworks and splendid architecture. It is regarded as the tallest Eastern Orthodox Church in the world.
