Chkalov Monument, Nizhny-Novgorod is regarded as one of the most important tourist attractions in the city of Nizhny-Novgorod. Chkalov Monument, Nizhny-Novgorod was built in the memoriam of Valerie Chkalov who was a famous test pilot. Among the Monuments in Nizhny Novgorod, the Chkalov monument deserves special mention.
Chkalov developed several new features in aerobatics. From the year 1936 to 1937 he participated in several long flights from Moscow to Vancouver, Washington via the North Pole and covered a nonstop distance of more than 8000 kilometers. He was killed in a plane crash while testing a flight. Eighteen months after the death of Chkalov in the year 1940 a memorial was set up. Chkalov was born in a village called Vasilyova which is now named Chkalovsk. He was so famous that the city of Orenburg was named after him from the year 1938 to 1957. There are some streets and railway stations in Russia that bear the name of this famous pilot.
The Chkalov staircase is situated below the Chkalov memorial. It is a huge stairway which leads to the Volga bank. The monument presents a beautiful view from the top. The entire river basin area can be viewed from the top of the monument. The river Volga can be seen to the north of the monument while a faint orange spot can be seen at the middle. This orange spot is none other than the Alexander Nevski Cathedral. Another beautiful structure that can be seen from the top of the monument is the unique double decker bridge that leads to the north of Novgorod which carries both air and car traffic. Another beautiful sight from the monument is the staircase down below. The staircase is a spiral one with beautiful flowers on its both sides. Just to the right of the monument lies a renovated building.
