The place is colloquially known as the Nizhny and is the fourth largest city of Russia. It is also regarded as the economic and the cultural centre of the vast Volga –Vyatka economic region and is also the administrative centre of the Volga district. From the year 1932 to 1990 the city was known as Gorky due to the birth of the famous writer Maxim Gorky in its realms.
The place has many tourist attractions with a number of historical, architectural and cultural monuments located at different corners of the city. There are about two hundred cultural and art institutions, theatre halls and academies in this place. Besides these, concert halls and movie theaters are also present in the city.
The main attractions of the city are:
Kremlin: This is one of the main and dominating features of the city which was built in the year 1500 AD and took eleven years to be completed.
Abbeys: The two medieval abbeys in the heart of the city are common hotspots for the visitors. The tall towers and the huge walls of the abbeys are their main features.
Monasteries: Among the monasteries, the Pechersky Ascension Monastery is one of the famous monasteries of the city which has the five-domed cathedral surrounding it. The monastery also has two very ancient churches with tent roofs which were built during the 17th century. The other monastery which is worth mentioning is the “Annunciation Monastery” which is surrounded by strong walls and also has a five domed cathedral and a church. Both these structures were built during the 17th century.
Churches: The place is also famous for ancient churches. The churches were built by the Stroganovs in the Baroque style. Of the churches the “Virgin’s Nativity” church deserves special mention. The church is situated in the central street. The other church which needs special mention is the “Church of Our Lady of Smolensk”. This church is located in the village of Gordeevka where once the Stroganov Palace stood.
