Nizhny Novgorod Art Gallery, Nizhny Novgorod is regarded as one of the most important museums in Novgorod and also in Russia. Nizhny Novgorod Art Gallery, Nizhny Novgorod houses many important works of famous painters and artists of Russia.
The gallery was first opened to the public in the year 1896. In the initial stages, the collection was housed in one of the towers of Nizhni Novgorod in Kremlin. Later on the works were removed to a beautiful mansion built during the 20th century. The design of this beautiful mansion was done by the well known Russian architects, the Vesnin brothers.
The museum has a huge collection of paintings and art. These collections were actually gifted by the “Academy of Arts” and by some other artists. From the year 1917 the museum also received many paintings when the government decided a
planned distribution of arts and paintings to the various museums of the country . The central art gallery of Russia also donated some works of art and paintings to the museum. Among the famous intellectuals, Maxim Gorky the famous writer and philosopher took a tremendous initiative in collecting paintings and works of art for the museum. Among the famous paintings donated by Maxim Gorky the Russian Venus by Boris Kustodyev and series of paintings by Nickolai Roerich are the most renowned.
The size of the Nizhny Novgorod Art Gallery, Nizhny Novgorod is quite large and has more than 12,000 exhibits. Some of the famous artists whose works are on display are:

- Pieter de Grebber etc.
The museum is also famous for the marvelous collections of Russian Modern art with works by:

- Mikhail Larionov and many others
The museum also houses collections from east Asia.
