The Kremlin, Nizhny Novgorod is one of the most important tourist attractions of Nizhny Novgorod. The Kremlin, Nizhny Novgorod can also be considered as the heart of the city.
The Kremlin, Nizhny Novgorod is actually the central part of the ancient town and occupies a relatively small territory. The place occupies a certain portion of a hill on the confluence of the Olga and the Volga rivers.
The first of the wooden fortresses was built here in the year 1221. At this time, the erection of the walls of Nizhni Novgorod Principality was started. The walls that are seen today were built during the 16th century (1500 – 1511). The construction of the walls on the steep side was designed by the famous Italian architect Peter Friazin. During the entire 16th century, Kremlin experienced four sieges. At the initial stages, the Kremlin wall was about 1.5 miles long and was some 200 yards less than that of the Moscow Kremlin. Out of the thirteen towers which were originally there, only eleven have so far survived.
The Kremlin, Nizhny Novgorod is also famous for towers out of which the most famous are:
Koromyslova (Yoke) Tower: According to a popular belief the tower was so named due to the yoke (fabric) used as a weapon by a young girl to fight the Tartars. The girl was the first to meet the enemy and went to the river early in the morning. After getting a resistance from the girl, the intruders decided not to invade the land any further and resolved to retire.
The Ivanovskaya Tower: This tower was the center of defence of lower Kremlin and protected the traders. Canons were fired from this tower during conflicts.
Chasovaya (Clock) Tower: This tower was used as an observation post and was built during the 16th century.
Dmitrovskaya Tower: This tower acted as the center of defence for the upper Kremlin. It was regarded as the highest and the most fortified tower of Nizhni Novgorod. Now the tower is used as a bank office.
Besides the tower there are several beautiful buildings in The Kremlin, Nizhny Novgorod. Among them the “House of Soviets” is worth mentioning. The tower is situated to the right of the entrance of the Dmitrovskaya Tower. From a very large distance, the building appears like an airplane and is the seat of the City Council.
