Alexander II assumed power after Russia’s terrible defeat in the Crimean War and initiated a number of reforms. These include freedom of serfs and various other military and judicial reforms. However, he was assassinated in the year 1881 by a group of revolutionists.

The Church was built here during the years 1883 and 1907 and was officially called Resurrection of Christ Church. The royal family funded almost the whole construction of the church and other contributors were private donors. The Church of the Saviour on Spilled Blood, Saint Petersburg is beautifully decorated with mosaics in both the interior as well as the exterior. The interior of the church is decorated with various types of marbles and several thousand square yards of mosaic. Lots of famous Russian artists of this time were involved in making these mosaics- some names are V.M. Vasnetsov, M.V. Nesterov and M.A. Vrubel. However, the chief architect of the Church of the Saviour on Spilled Blood, Saint Petersburg was not a Russian.

During the 1930s, the Church of the Saviour on Spilled Blood, Saint Petersburg was closed for a long time. Later it came under the authority of St Issac’s Cathedral and it started a massive restoration program stretching for long 25 years. It remained closed for 30 years and was reopened in 1997 again after a massive restoration work.
