Samoa

Samoa or the Independent State of Samoa as it is officially known among the people is situated in the South Pacific Ocean. Samoa was included in the United Nations in 1976 and since then it has acted as an individual state. The first settlers came down to Samoa long ago and history of Samoa will tell you that the first few inhabitants of the place came from South East Asia.

After the Dutch and the Germans it was the English settlers who came to Samoa. However according to historical records before the Germans could do anything the United States claimed the Samoan Islands as their own. People of Samoa started showing their discontent against the rulers in the 1920’s. The first phase of the movement was known as “Mau” or “Strongly held Opinion”. This was basically a non-violent movement. With the death of Chief Tupua Tamasese Lealofi the peaceful demonstration came to a sudden halt. The Constitution of 1960 declared the state independent.

Today Samoa boasts of a unicameral legislative system and the prime minister is chosen by the people. If we look at the geography of Samoa we will see that the place is close to the equator and stands close to Hawaii. Major portions of Samoa are covered with volcanoes and you will two important islands which are known as Savaii and Upolu. If we look at the economy of Samoa we will see that it is mainly determined by agricultural exports and maritime trade. As the soil is fertile you will find a number of coconut tress and the main item of export is the copra.

Although Samoa has seen the boons of modern development the culture of Samoa retains the traditional or the “fa’a Samoa way”. Most of the Samoans are religious people and most of them follow the traditional way of life including a community life. If you are in Samoa then you cannot miss the famous “Siva”. This dance form is very similar to the Hawaiian hula dance and there are quite a few places which you can visit while you are staying in Samoa. You will be amazed at the natural splendor of the place including the waterfalls and the sandy beaches. The most beautiful falls are known as Mafa Pass, Fuipisa Falls and the Falefa Falls.
