History of Samoa

If we go through the history of Samoa we will find that the first inhabitants of Samoa were probably the Polynesians who came and settled in this place from Tonga. According to the history of Samoa the first colonizers who came to Samoa visited the place with commercial interest.

It was mostly the French and Dutch traders who came to Samoa. According to Samoan history there was a clash of interest among the British, Germans and the Americans and it was the Treaty of 1899 which declared that henceforth it will be the Americans who will be responsible for the administration of Samoa. This is one of the most important historical events in Samoa and has shaped the after course of Samoa considerably. According to this treaty it was known that United States of America will be responsible for the administration of the islands which are situated in the west of 171 W.

The other islands which are known as part of the German territory are all located in the Western Samoa. According to the history of Samoa New Zealand was responsible for the administration of the islands in Samoa. It was in 1946 that Samoa became a part of the UN territory. Gradually the Samoans became averse to the idea of being ruled by the colonizers and wanted their independence. Freedom was the talk of the day and people took the method of peaceful resistance. They took the vow of protesting against the rule of New Zealand peacefully without any violence and this period is known as “Mau”.

It was on January 1st, 1961 that Samoa was declared independent free of all control from the New Zealanders. 1947 was a landmark year in the history of Samoa as the Samoan Legislative Body got substantial power and Samoans formed the majority of the legislative body. It was in 1990 that the Independent State of Samoa gave the right to universal suffrage to women. It was only in 1997 that the name of the island was changed and Samoa was the name given to the independent state. You will love the history of Samoa which will tell you about this colorful and vibrant place.
