Drummond Castle Gardens

One of the famous Tourist Attractions in Perth is the Drummond Castle Gardens, Perth. Perth was previously the capital of Scotland. It is a quaint little city in the Perthshire region in Scotland, snuggled on the banks of River Tay. The beautiful land of Perth is home to several points of interest. The Drummond Castle Gardens, Perth is rated highly among all these tourist places in this city.

The Drummond Castle Gardens, Perth is one of the well-kept formal gardens in Europe. The Drummond Castle was built by John, the 1st Lord Drummond, on a rocky protrusion. The 2nd Earl, who was a Privy Councillor to James VI and Charles I, transformed the gardens and the castle as well, after he succeeded in the year 1612. The castle was restored and rebuilt by the 1st Earl of Ancaster in the year 1890. However, the garden still stands as it is.

The history of the Drummond Castle Gardens, Perth dates back to the late 15th century when the first Lord Drummond built it on the land granted to him. The gardens catered cherries for James IV in the year 1508 when Lord Drummond was hunting in the Glen Artney Forest. In early 19th century, Lewis Kennedy supervised the re-establishment of the parterre and formal terracing in front of the Drummond Castle

After the Second World War, the workforce at the castle reduced. Thus, it was decided by Phyllis Astor, wife of the 3rd Earl of Ancaster, to modify the garden. The Drummond family formed the Grimsthorpe and Drummond Castle Trust in the year 1978. This was done for the maintenance of the castle buildings, gardens and surrounding park for the benefit of succeeding generations of the family.

The Drummond Castle is not open to public, but the Drummond Castle Gardens, Perth offers captivating views of the buildings and surrounding landscape. The garden remains open during the Easter Weekend, and thereafter daily from May to October. The garden opens at 1 pm and closes at 6 pm, with last admission at 5 pm.
