There are of a number of world Heritage Sites in Senegal. The most famous of all World Heritage Sites in Senegal is the Goree Island. Goree Island is rich in history. It is also the country's most famous tourist attraction. One of the most frequently visited sites is the Slave House. The slave house was built by the Dutch in 1776 and is preserved in its original state. Other tourist spots in the area are the breath taking ruins of Fort Nassau, the Church, Saint Michel and the Historical Museum. A popular joint for tourists Goreé played an important role in the history of Africa. The island is only three kilometers from Dakar.
Niokobo Koba National Park, another of the World Heritage Site in Senegal was created as a hunting reserve in 1926 and was transformed to a forest reserve in 1951.The Sanctuary is internationally recognized as a Biosphere Reserve under UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere Programme. It has been inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1981.
Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary is one of the world Heritage Sites in Senegal. It is located in the delata of the River Senegal. The area is flooded with lakes, ponds and bayous surrounded by streams and backwaters. This Sanctuary boasts of housing three million migratory birds. White Pelican, Purple Heron, African spoonbill and Great Egret are some of the rare species of birds which are sighted there. The Sanctuary received its World Heritage status in the year 1981.
The Island of Saint Louis was founded in 1659. Saint-Louis, well known among the World Heritage Sites in Senegal is a town full of history. The Island of Saint Louis was the capital of Senegal at the beginning of the 19th century. The Faidherbe Bridge is an artistic piece and it hangs over the Senegal River for a length of 500 meters and is mostly habitated by the fishing community. This aesthetically appealing work of architecture appears on the list of the UNESCO world's heritage.
