Silhouette, Seychelles is an ideal retreat for all nature lovers. Untouched by modern progress, this place has neither roads nor paths and is reachable only by boat or a helicopter. Silhouette lies about 20 kilometers to the northwest of Mahe. From Mahe International Airport, Silhouette Island is only a 15 minute flight along the east coast of Mahe to Victoria, via North East Point and Beau Vallon Bay. On a clear day, one can experience spectacular views of Sainte Anne Marine Park, Port Victoria and the west coast of Mahe. To access this place one needs to undertake long forest trails. The trails take one through untouched virgin vegetation.
Silhouette is the third biggest granite island of the Seychelles. The top of its mountain range shines at night like a ghostly pyramid in the moonlit sea. The island has one of the densest rain forests of the Indian Ocean. For many years it was the home of the notorious pirate Jean Hodoul, and the locals still believe that he buried treasure in the fissured mountains and cliffs of the island.
The island has a small settlement called La Passe. There are only 130 permanent inhabitants in the place. The other inhabitants of Silhouette include giant tortoises for which a captive breeding programme has been started. There are several beautiful palm fringed beaches which makes you to have real pleasure.
The highest summit in Silhouette is Mount Dauban. It is 740 meter in height. The Mountain is surrounded by a mostly unexplored rain forest full of botanical treasures such as the rare pitcher-plant, orchids, rare hardwoods and the incense tree, which can only be found on Silhouette.
The Seychelles Giant Tortoise Conservation Project in Silhouette is a unique rescue attempt of two endangered species. Visitors can explore the only breeding colony of these species. Silhouette also has a huge diversity of plants and animals. In fact, ecologists see it as one of the most important hotspots of the Indian Ocean.
