History of Singapore




The History of Singapore is as glorified as the present of the country. The history of the place takes back to the memories of the place takes back the travelers to the island nation to the antecedents of this city-state. Some Javanese inscriptions which dates back to the 14th century refer to the place as Tumasik which means sea. The present day name of Singapore finds its roots to the Southern India region during the reign of Rajendra the ruler of South Indian of the Chola Kingdom. At that point if time the place was called as Singapura or the Lion City. the history of the place itself bored the name as the city of lions of the state.

The state-country of Singapore was ruled by the Europeans during the 16th - 19th century period. The Europeans were attracted to the place for its strategic location in the South Asian region which accentuated its importance. The Historical Events of Singapore also witnessed the Portuguese making the Malacca as the port for their convenience. Later the Dutch came and chose the place as their port along with the East India Company.

History was written in bold letters in Singapore in the year 1818 when Sir Thomas Stamford chose the land to be his new port. This one proved to be a turning point in the history of the island and one of the most significant incidents in the history of the place. Firstly he had to face bit of difficulty in operation as he face resistance from the locals. Later on he negotiated well with the local ruler- Sultan of Johor and concluded on a treaty on 6th February 1819 which meant Singapore was a base for British Trading.

By the end of the 19th century, Singapore has turned out to be a multi- cultural society due to migration from the various other parts of Asia. The chief elements comprising the Singaporean society was the Chinese, Malayans and Indians. The cultural unification of the city clearly reflects in the architecture, language, behavioral pattern of the people and the various cuisines.

The history of Singapore also had a great influence of the Second World War, when the Japanese army invaded the place in 1944. The history of Singapore also has made the place an important element in making the place of utmost importance in terms of trade and commerce.
