Merlion Park

Singapore is adorned by many beautiful parks, gardens and sleek skyscrapers which attracts tourists from all over the world. The Merlion Park is a favorite tourist haunt owing to its ideal location on the edge of the city. The Merlion was initially designed as a symbol for the Singapore Tourism Board in the year 1964. The unique structure of the Merlion with the lion head and the body of a fish resting on a rest of waves soon became Singapore's icon for the world. If you go a tour of the tourist attractions in Singapore then the Merlion Park among all the parks in Singapore is a must-see place for you as well as your family.

The statue of Merlion which dominates the Merlion Park in Singapore was originally situated at the Merlion Park by the Esplanade Bridge. Tourists from all over the world flocked in to see the Merlion Park and the Merlion placed elegantly in the park. The installation of the Merlion to this location was carried on very ceremoniously by the then Prime Minister of Singapore, Mr Lee Kuan Yew on the 15th of September in the year 1972. However that Merlion has been shifted to a new home which is just adjacent to the Fullerton, even though there are two Merlions at the Merlion Park as well. Nevertheless the number of tourists visiting the Merlion Park to see the Merlion statute has not decreased ever since.

The lion head was originally designed by Mr Fraser Brunner and it represents the lion that was spotted by Sang Nila Utama. The 'Malay Annals' records the incident as taking place when the prince had re-discovered Singapura in A.D. 11. The fish tail of the Merlion represent the ancient city of Temasek which means sea in the Javanese language. It symbolizes the fact that Singapore was initially a humble fishing village even though now it has turned out to be one of the most popular tourist spots in the world.

The Merlion Statue measuring 8.6 metres in height and weighing around 70 tonnes was built by the late craftsmen Mr Lim Nang Seng from cement fondue. Mr. Lim built another smaller version of the Merlion measuring 2 metres in height and weighing 3 tones. The body of this statue was made of cement while the skin was made of porcelain plates and the eyes comprised small red teacups.

One can get beautiful views of Singapore’s colonial district when strolling in Merlion Park. There is a souvenir shop within its precincts that sells Merlion T shirts as well as other gift items.
