Philatelic Museum

The Philatelic Museum in Singapore has the rare distinction of being the first philatelic Museum in the whole of South East Asia. Inaugurated in the year 1995 as a result of the initiative taken by the Telecommunication Authority of Singapore, the Singapore Philatelic Museum is well on its way to becoming one of the foremost tourist attractions in Singapore. Presently the Singapore Philatelic Museum is a fully owned subsidiary of the National Heritage Board which took over its responsibility in the year 2000.

The philatelic materials are of immense value to posterity. At the Singapore Philatelic Museum, all these philatelic materials are well kept. Any visitor is sure to marvel at the collection of stamps at the Philatelic Museum in Singapore. Postal history artifacts that date back to the Straits Settlement are also housed in this museum. The rich collection of stamps of some of the individual collectors is also there on display.

The chief objective of the museum is to arouse people’s interest in philately. The philatelic materials can definitely be put to a lot of use to know more not only about the history and heritage of Singapore but of the entire world. In fact, the museum organizes educational activities and programmes from time to time to encourage people to learn and know more.

The building in which the Singapore Philatelic Museum is housed has a quaint charm of its own. Designed by Tomilinson and Lermit Architects, it was originally an Anglo Chinese school building. The edifice is a fine example of colonial style of architecture. There are arches along the second storey verandah and the windows are also quite ornate. The building was also used as a Methodist Book Room for a period of time. But currently it stands in all its initial glory as a result of the restoration work done by the authorities of the museum.

It is a delightful experience for the stamp collectors as well as the local tourists to see the large collection of stamps belonging to Singapore as well as other foreign countries at the same place. A big attraction at the Singapore Philatelic Museum is to be able to see the several processes that finally leads to the issuing of a stamp. Located at 23 B Coleman Street, it takes about an hour to visit the Singapore Philatelic Museum.
