Kranj is the third largest municipality and fourth largest city in Slovenia. This city is located beside a river at a distance of approximately 20km to the north-west of Ljubljana. The ancient city of Kranj has been inhabited since the first century B.C. and is believed to have been the seat of the powerful Slovene prince Vojnomir who reigned during the transition from the Roman period to the Middle Ages. In the later yeas, Kranj served as an important seat of the Carniola march and its margrave. The strategic location of Kranj was highly instrumental in its development into an important trade center in the Middle Ages, due to which is acquired the status of a city in the 13th century.
