Florida Islands Info

Florida Islands or Nggela Islands form a part of the Solomon Islands. It consists of a string of islands located in the Central Province of Solomon Islands . The Florida Islands, nestled in the Pacific Ocean, comprise Tulagi, Tambong, Gavutu and Nggela Sule. Tulagi is the provincial capital of the Florida islands. The islands are situated at a distance of 35 kilometers away from Honiara, towards the north. The islands are situated across the Iron Bottom Sound. Tulagi is famous for its diving sites.

Tulagi, one of the popular tourist destinations in Florida Islands, is an island situated of the southern coast of the spectacular Florida island. The island was occupied by the Japanese during the second world war in 1942. The Japanese wanted to set a seaplane base here on the island. However, the ships standing in the Tulagi harbor were destroyed by planes from USS Yorktown. On August 7th the US forces invaded Tulagi. Tulagi is home to many Second world war wrecks. The wrecks can be found both on land and under water.

Some of the underwater wrecks are USS Aaron Ward, Twin Tunnels, USS Kanawha, HMNZS Moa and the Kawanishi H6K4 “ Mavis” flying boat. These wrecks are popular diving sites in Tulagi in Florida Islands. The wrecks of the ship USS Aaron Ward are situated at a depth of 70 meters below the surface of the sea. It sits in an erect position at the sandy bottom of the sea, off Tinete Point close to Tulagi.

The USS Kanawha is a huge American fleet oiler which sits upright close to the Tulaghi Harbor at a depth of 60 meters below sea-level. The New Zealand cornvette HMNZS Moa is located 40 meters below the surface of the sea, in Tulaghi harbor. While the Kawanishi H6K4 “ Mavis” flying boat can be found at a depth of 100 feet below the surface of the sea. Tulagi offers great Sightseeing in Florida Islands.
