Geography of Solomon Islands

The geography of Solomon Islands is punctuated by the archipelago consisting of about 1,000 mountainous islands scattered all along with the low-lying coral atolls. The Solomon Islands lies on the eastern side of Papua New Guinea and to the northeast of Australia in the south Pacific. The Solomon Islands are a conglomeration of around 1000 islands and this is precisely the most attractive point about this place. The location of the Solomon Islands places it in the south Pacific region. The main islands of Solomon Islands are the Guadalcanal, Malaita, New Georgia, Santa Isabel, San Cristóbal, Choiseul and the Santa Cruz group. The Santa Cruz groups are accompanied by other three islands of Tikopia, Anuta, and Fatutaka which are pretty small and remotely placed. The distance between the islands located at the westernmost corner and the eastern tip is around 1500 kilometers. The Santa Cruz groups of islands which are placed north of Vanuatu and of which Tikopia is also a part are one of the most isolated islands of the archipelago. These islands are almost 200 kilometers away from the main islands. Another instance of geographical distance between the various islands of this archipelago comes into fray as the Bougainville which is geographically a part of Solomon Islands is politically ruled by the Papua New Guinea administration.

The topography of the Solomon Islands also allows the travelers to enjoy a lot. The travelers coming down to the islands can enjoy two distinct terrestrial eco-regions. The better part of the islands belongs to the rain forests eco-region which also has the islands of Bougainville and Buka included in them. The part of Santa Cruz group of Islands fall under the Vanuatu rain forests eco-region which also includes the neighboring archipelago of Vanuatu.

The geographical variation in terms of soil varies across the different regions of this island. The quality of soil in the island varies from extremely rich volcanic to the lesser fertile limestone land. The land has many volcanoes with varying degrees of activity.

The geography of Solomon Islands is also perfect for setting up plantations in the island. These plantations offer suitable conditions for more than 230 varieties of orchids and other tropical flowers to bloom.
