History of Solomon Islands




The history of Solomon Islands dates back to a few years and it is believed that the islands were inhabited since at least 2000 B.C. the islands first came into being with the visit of Alvaro de Mendana of Spain along with his companions in 1568 A.D. when they explored the islands. They named the islanders as Solomons and the island the Solomon Islands. After that period the Solomon Islands were not explored for another 200 years and the history of Solomon Islands too went unnoticed.

The Solomon Island's history had a brief period of reckoning when Great Britain and Germany divided the islands between them in 1886. But with the course of time it was the British who gained the total control of the islands. British then ruled the entire territory. After this period the history of Solomon Islands has recorded many incidents. During the Second World War the Japanese invaded the islands. This was the time the islands witnessed some of the bloodiest battles in the canvas of the Pacific Theater. It was the famed battle of Guadalcanal which saw the bloodbath in the islands. It was again in 1945, British troops gained the control of the islands and the administrative powers went to them.

One of the glorious years in the islands was the year of 1978 when the Solomon Islands were handed over their independence and the islands started its operations as a self-governing state. This was the most inspirational incident in the history of Solomon Islands.

The years to follow saw various other changes as well. The decade of 1990 witnessed the border with Papua New Guinea (PNG) being the source of tension in the region with the intrusions by the Papua New Guinea forces into the Solomon Islands territory. The Papua New Guinea forces were up in arms, countering secessionist action on neighboring Bougainville Island from the territory of Solomon Islands. The history of Solomon Islands has seen many ups and downs. The history of the islands has been an interesting subject for the historians.

The history of Solomon Islands also has the record of the Tsunami attack and massive earthquake of the magnitude of 8.0 on the seismograph.
