Giant Castle, Drakensberg

Giant Castle, Drakensberg is visited by thousands of visitors all through the year. The Giant Castle gets its name from the mountainous terrains, borders and peaks of the range which together looks like a “profile of a sleeping giant”. The unique shape of the Giant Castle, Drakensberg is one of the striking features of this place. The major portion of the mountain is covered by grass and this grassy plateau is snuggled in the middle of two valleys. If the day is clear you will have an amazing view of the surroundings from the mountain top. The peak of Giant’s Castle is part of the mountain range of Drakensberg.

While visiting Giant’s Castle in Drakensberg you will come across a number of bearded vultures which are now part of the endangered species. They are kept within the Giant’s Castle Game Reserve and they are commonly known as “bone eaters of the berg”. As they are subjects of great concern due to their decreasing numbers the bird watchers time their visit according to the “vulture hide feeding season” which is generally from May to September. Apart from Giant’s Castle, Drakensberg the vultures also inhabit portions of the Lesotho highlands.

It is the natural splendor of Giant’s Mountain, Drakensberg that has attracted thousands of nature lovers. Apart from the plateaus, and mountainous terrains one can find sparkling streams which gush out of the mountains, river banks covered with green bushes, grassy slopes which are steep and can pose difficulty for the climbers and a number of cliffs and abysses. The steep buttresses are challenging for the hikers. Some of the popular hikes which are favorites among the hikers are Bannerman Hut which is reputed to be a difficult climb and Champagne Pools which are less steep and are a welcome relief from the steep climbs. There are several pools in the crates of the Giant’s Mountain, Drakensberg which are ideal for fishing and swimming.

One thing that the holidayers have to be really careful about is the weather of Giant’s Castle which can be very unpredictable at times. Even if you experience warm weather in the plains one should keep a track of the weather forecasts before the climb because clouds and rain are common and the weather can change within minutes. The Giant’s Castle Game Reserve is famous for “San” where the visitors can have a glimpse of natural habitats and cave paintings of the Bushman. The San Art Museum and Main Caves Museum are the best places to know about the early tribes especially the San people. There are number of accommodation facilities in Giant’s Castle, Drakensberg and the visitors can put up at the mountain huts. The ecosystem is another major attraction of Giant’s Castle in Drakensberg.
