Mandela Museum, Johannesburg

The Mandela Museum, Johannesburg is a lovely repository and one of the chief Johannesburg tourist attractions. The Mandela Museum, Johannesburg is firmly ensconced on the historical terrains of Soweto, in the southwestern fringes of Johannesburg in South Africa.

The Mandela Museum in Johannesburg was actually the former residence of the famous Gandhian and crusader against the ghastly practice of apartheid, Nelson Mandela. The Johannesburg Mandela Museum consists of four airy rooms which are piled with old artifacts and items that belonged to Nelson Mandela. The accumulation comprises picture frames bordering old photographs of Mandela with his kith and kin; some diaries, which can be described as memoirs that contain autobiographical excerpts written by Mandela himself; lovely paintings that portray the artistic side of the dedicated freedom fighter; and some honoris causa degrees that Nelson Mandela was honored with for being one of the doyens to rally the indigenous South Africans to stand up and protest against the lurid apartheid. Inspired by the ideals of Gandhi, Nelson Mandela gave his whole life to demolish this atrocious evil which was a great hindrance to the progress of the native Africans.

Some of the apparel of Nelson Mandela's youth is also present in the Mandela Museum, Johannesburg. The Mandela Museum, Johannesburg was Mandela's first dwelling when he started out on his own in 1946. Nelson Mandela lived in this residence with his wife. Subsequently, when Nelson Mandela rose in fame as an activist against apartheid, he eschewed this lovely home because he was always going places to spearhead his political and social causes and missions and also to dodge his many 'political opponents' who were always after him to capture and arrest him.

The residence of Mandela was subject to the wrath of his opponents who set it ablaze several times with explosives till it became virtually impossible to reside in it. It was due to the decision of Nelson Mandela's second wife that the house was transformed into the Mandela Museum, Johannesburg because she thought that the residence was the focal point of several movements in favor of the blacks. This enterprising lady, Madikizela-Mandela established an eatery and a tavern opposite the Mandela Museum, Johannesburg so that tourists of the future would be able to dine and wine comfortably after their visit to the repository.

Currently, the Mandela Museum, Johannesburg is under the aegis of the Soweto Heritage Trust. The Trust is determined to renovate the repository so that it becomes a vibrant tourist hotspot. Though several tourists visit the Mandela Museum, Johannesburg regularly, the Soweto Heritage Trust feels that if subject to renovation, the Museum will attract a greater number of tourists to its grounds.
