Belvidere Church in Knysna is a chapel that was built in the year 1885. The architecture of the chapel reflects Norman school of architecture. The chapel was built for the son-in-law of George Rex. The chapel is located close to the Brenton-on-Sea. Belvidere Church, Knysna is nestled in Belvidere in Knysna. Belvidere spreading over an area of 10 acres, is situated towards the western shore of the spectacular lagoon of Knysna. The founder of Belvidere called Thomas Duthie had been buried in the yard behind the church. A quaint manor house sits in the center of Belvidere. The manor house was built by Thomas Duthie in 1849. It lies near the Belvidere Church, Knysna.
History of Belvidere
George Rex acquired the land which is known by Knysna in 1830. He settled in Belvidere and ran a timber business. A young smart Scotsman by the name of Thomas Henry Duthie married the the third daughter of George Rex, Caroline. In 1833 he purchased a farmland called Belvidere from his father-in-law .
