Mrs Ada Susan Tatham starts Tatham Art Gallery in Pietermaritzburg. She was the wife of the President of Natal and an eminent figure of the region. The first exhibition of the gallery was organized in the year 1903 with the help of donations. The gallery in the initial days of opening was run by the donations of another important public figure, Lieutenant Colonel R.H. Whitwell.

18th century works in the gallery comprises of important French and British arts forms. The collections also have variety of South African artists' works.
Whitwell Collection: This collection comprises of paintings, prints, drawings and objects d'art of 19 the century and beginning of 20th century. The collection was started with the help of donations of Colonel Whitwell. Visitors can see works from countries like China, Japan, Persia and Russia.
Bodenstein Collection: In this gallery, visitors can see the compilation of art works and sculptures by the notable Michael Zondi. There are also works of his brothers, Mandla Nkosi Zondi and Asmon Mzila. A section of the collection displays clay figurines by Hezekiel Ntuli. It also includes conventional Zulu artifacts like the beaded Zulu necklaces.
Peirson Collection: One of the famous art teachers, Lorna Pierson taught in Ndaleni Art School in Richmond. Guests can view the works of the students of this art school that comprises of wooden sculptures and a many paper mâché works.
Johansson Collection: Here the print collection of the gallery is beautifully displayed. 31 print sets by Rorke's Drift artists are present that are done around the year 1970. These exclusive prints were donated to the gallery by Johansson and are named after him.
Millin Collection: There are 199 pieces of domestic ceramic ware which include Lucia ware, Linn ware and Kalahari ware
