This airport in Port Elizabeth was founded in the year 1929. It was Lieutenant Colonel Miller, who required an airfield to transport his postal service between the city and Cape Town and he needed the airport services urgently. After nine years in 1936, the airport was open for public use. At that time there was a single runway, a hangar and a concrete apron.
During the second world war, the airport was further extended to make way for 42 Air School for the Royal Air Force and 6 Squadron South African Air Force from the southern and eastern sides of the airport.Commercial operations however remained undisturbed and were conducted from the northern side. The first jet-propelled aircraft landed on the airport in the year 1954.
