A world renowned casino resort located in the North West of South Africa, Sun City is a popular tourist attraction in South Africa. The resort lies at a driving distance of two hours from Johannesburg, near the city of Rustenburg. Sun City shares its borders with Pilanesberg National Park.
Established by the hotel tycoon Sol Kerzner as a part of his Sun International group of properties, Sun City started functioning officially on 7 December 1979. However at that time it was located in the Bantustan of Bophuthatswana. The resort continued to prosper since its inception in Bophutatswana and was finally re-incorporated in the new South Africa in 1994.
Sun City is a favorite holiday destination and weekend getaways of the people of South Africa and is frequented by reputed musicians like Queen, Elton John, Linda Ronstadt, Julio Iglesias, The O'Jays, Ray Charles, Rod Stewart and Dionne Warwick. World famous singer Thomas Anders has also performed at the resort. The auditorium of the resort 'Sun City Super Bowl' has the capacity to accommodate more than 6,230 people at a time.
Sun City has four hotels namely Sun City Hotel, Cascades Hotel, The Cabanas and The Palace of the Lost City. Apart from the four hotels, the resort complex also houses time-share facilities like "The Sun City Vacation Club. It is one of the popular self catering facilities of the country.
Sun City is also the home to two internationally acclaimed 18-hole golf courses, the Gary Player Country Club and the Lost City Golf Course, which are both designed by Gary Player. The Gary Player Country Club hosts the prestigious tournament of Nedbank Golf Challenge (formerly known as the Nedbank Million Dollar Golf Challenge). The Lost City Golf Course is well known for its 38 real crocodiles in the water feature of the 13th hole.
