Christmas in South Korea

Christmas in South Korea is celebrated with lots of pomp and show. It is one of the most awaited festivals in the county and is declared as a national holiday in most of the institutes and work places. Although the Christmas in South Korea is not as commercialized as Christmas in America, there are many Korean Christians who ensure that this is a time of celebration. South Korea is the only East Asian country to recognize Christmas as a public holiday.

Today the Christmas in South Korea has become so celebrated that more and more businesses have begun putting up embellishments and selling Christmas cards made in western styles. Many Koreans prefer to give New Year gifts instead of Christmas gifts, due to its proximity to the end of the year,

The natives of South Korea recognize Christmas as a public holiday. The Non-Christian Koreans go about their daily routine on December 25 but the others may engage in some holiday customs such as gift-giving, sending Christmas cards, and setting up decorated trees in their homes. The little dots especially appear to have embraced Santa Claus, whom they call Santa Haraboji or Grandfather Santa in Korean. The local radio stations play the holiday music on Christmas Day and a few days before. The television stations start airing Christmas films and cartoon during this time that are especially popular in the Western countries.

Just like in the West, the Christian churches in South Korea hold Christmas pageants and conduct special services on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The young people especially enjoy the fellowship these observances provide. After the Christmas Eve services, they go caroling to the homes of older church members, where they are typically treated to hot drinks and snacks.

There are many celebrations taking place in the Christmas time in South Korea. May people get together and enjoy partying in the evening time. Many other visit their relative’s homes and make merry together. The Christmas time in the country is one time when the place is worth visiting. The buildings, shops and other tourist attractions are decorated with glittering lights.
