Daegu is South Korea’s fourth largest city and is gradually becoming a hot tourist destination. Tourists from all over the world come here to discover this wonderful land. Mt. Palgongsan, Daegu is located in the north eastern region of Daegu and acts as the backdrop of the city. Mt. Palgongsan, Daegu is 1,192 meters above sea level. The natural rock cave, Samjon Seokgul Cave, and Donghwasa Temple are located on Mt. Palgongsan, Daegu. Donghwasa Temple has nine cultural treasures including Gatbawi, a seated figure of the Maitreya Buddha carved into a rock wall at the top of the mountain. The Buddhists consider Mt. Palgongsan as one of the most sacred mountains in Korea. In 1992, a large stone Buddha was erected on the grounds of Donghwasa. This statue is seen as a symbol of a wish for the unification of the country. The statue is 33 meters high and has a circumference of 16.5 meters. It is one of the largest Buddha statues in the world.
The Buddha on Dongbong Peak of Mt. Palgongsan, Daegu, is a 6-meters tall image. It is engraved on the surface of a huge rock at the peak of the Mt. Palgongsan and faces the west. Like the other stone images of Buddha on the Gwanbong Peak of the Mt. Palgongsan, the Buddha on Dongbong Peak of Mt. Palgongsan, Daegu belongs to the architectural style that was evident in the Unified Silla period (668-935). The image is a great piece of sculpture, specially the face and the garments, though some parts are not that smoothly done. The Buddha on Dongbong Peak of Mt. Palgongsan, Daegu is depicted with both his feet hidden under his robes.
For reaching the Buddha on Dongbong Peak of Mt. Palgongsan, Daegu you can avail of the City Bus No 105. After reaching Mt. Palgongsan you have to climb up the Mt. Palgongsan for around three and a half hours.
