Pagyesa Temple,Daegu

Daegu is one of the largest cities of South Korea. This place is famous for its rich heritage and presence of many ancient temples, pagodas, Stupas, statues, and other heritage sites that attract many people from all over the world. This center of Buddhist pilgrimage attracts tourists from all over the world. One of the many ancient as well as famous structures in Daegu is The Seated Wooden Buddha in Pagyesa Temple, Daegu. Pagyesa Temple, Daegu is famous for the picturesque valley surrounding it.

The word Pagye means blocking the stream and then reserving water from it. The Seated Wooden Buddha in Pagyesa Temple, Daegu was enshrined within a glass box in the main hall of the Pagyesa Temple. This main hall is known as Wontongjeon Hall. In 804 AD (5th ruling year of King Aejang and 9th ruling year of King Jinpyeong), the National Preceptor Simwangsa was constructed in this temple. The National Preceptor Simwangsa is based upon the wish words discovered within the Buddha statue. In 1447 (29th ruling year of King Sejong), this temple was reconstructed.

The Seated Wooden Buddha in Pagyesa Temple, Daegu is treated as the Regional Cultural Property. The Seated Wooden Buddha in Pagyesa Temple in Daegu is unusually high. The head of the statue is adorned with the triple high crown with a flower pattern. The sculpture of the statue shows that right hand of the Buddha is raised to the shoulder with thumb and second finger touching each other with the palm outward. The left hand is raised a little with the palm upward and the thumb and second finger just about touched on each other. The collar of this statue shows the influence of the ancient times. The Seated Wooden Buddha in Pagyesa Temple, Daegu is comparable with the seated mud-pasted Bodhisattva statues of the Jangnyuksa Temple, which shows an earnest face and thick clothes. The decoration of clothes worn by the statue is an expression at the transition stage before the Age of Joseon.

Similar styles of architecture are expressed at the wooden statue of the Goddess of Mercy in the Pagyesa Temple, Daegu and the gold and bronze seated statue of Unbuam Hermitage at the Eunhaesa Temple.
