It is primarily because of the art street in Gwangju that the city is known as the city of art in South Korea. To get there, take a cab to the Shin-nay Y.M.C.A. Alight at the downtown area and then cross the street to the K.E.B. Bank. A little walk ahead takes one to reach the police station. To the left is the art street.

The Art Street comprises of many stores. All the stores specialize in art supplies. Gwangju is especially famous for their brushes which are of high quality and high price. There are also many galleries with traditional and modern paintings. Apart from this one can buy ceramics of different kinds. This includes Korea’s high quality celadon green pottery.

Good quality paintings and hand-painted fans are very common here. The tea and pottery shops here are equally famous. The owners offer free tea to guests. The pottery has a gorgeous and striking appearance about them. For connoisseur of Asian art, this is the best place to shop. One can also walk around to admire the beautiful pieces of art strewn in and around the place.

Gwangju Art Street hummed with activity even a few years back. Busy artists displayed sculptures, calligraphy, ceramics, watercolors and woodworks. Antique dealers hawked 19th-century school textbooks, tobacco pipes, silk screens and “tadeumi,” smooth sticks shaped like bowling pins that are used to pound wrinkles out of “hanbok,” or Korean traditional clothing. The weekly Saturday art market drew crowds of eager collectors and sightseers. Galleries, craft shops and studios flourished and street performances enlivened life on the pavement.

Though most of the artists have folded their easels and shut their doors a few antique sellers still spread their wares on the sidewalk every Saturday, for art lovers. They are trying hard to keep the reputation of Art Street alive.
