The National Cemetery

In May, 1980, the city of Gwangju in South Korea spearheaded civil demonstrations against the military government of Chun Doo-hwan. The demonstrations were brutally suppressed by military forces. The elite units of the Special Operations Command put into operation fired automatic weapons into crowds of unarmed demonstrators. Many were killed. Unconfirmed sources said that more than a thousand died.

After civilian rule was reinstated, the revolt received due recognition as an effort to throw out military rule. The government made a formal apology for the incident and built a cemetery known as the National Cemetery in memory of the victims.

The Art Street

Gwangju is known as the city of art in Korea. This is because of the famous Art Street. The Art Street comprises many stores which specialize in art supplies. Gwangju is especially famous for their brushes which are of high quality and high price. Galleries with traditional and modern paintings abound in the street. The art street also sells ceramics of different kinds. This includes Korea’s high quality celadon green pottery.

Good quality paintings and hand-painted fans are very common here. For connoisseur of Asian art, this is a haven in more ways than one. One can also walk around to admire the beautiful pieces of art strewn around the place.

Gwangju National Museum

The museum is a major attraction in the city of Gwangju. The museum comprises a rare collection of 1, 027 metals pieces 1,907 pieces of gemstones 38,659 pieces of pottery and 42,537 other miscellaneous objects. It has permanent and temporary exhibition galleries. The permanent gallery has 6 sections all of which throw light on the evolution of the region from the dark ages of history. The museum is closed on Mondays but admission is free on the first Sunday of each month. Admission is free for those under 18 or over 65 and either 200 or 400 won for others.
