The sixth largest city of South Korea, Gwangju Metropolitan City is connected internationally through its two airports. These two airports are Gwangju Airport and Muan International Airport. Till date, Gwangju Airport managed by the Korea Airports Corporation is considered the main airport of the city. But, once Muan International Airport starts its operation to the fullest scale, Gwangju Airport will stop functioning.
The two airlines to serve Gwangju Airport include Asiana Airlines and Korean Air. These airlines make the reach to Gwangju possible from the capital of the country or from foreign countries like China. Gwangju transportation is also highly dependant on Muan International Airport. The domestic and international flights to operate to and from this airport include Asiana Airlines, China Southern Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, TransAsia Airways, Sichuan Airlines, and Viva Macau.
The internal transportation in Gwangju is mainly dependant on Gwangju Subway Line 1. Gwangju Metropolitan Rapid Transit Corporation has been the sole operator of this subway line since 2004. The subway transport facilities Gwangju help the commuters considerably to communicate within Sangmu Station and Pyeongdong Station.
The other mode of transportation in Gwangju is Korea Train eXpress (KTX). The two stations serving the city for this South Korea’s high-speed rail system are Gwangju Station and Songjeong-ri Station. These stations are not as yet connected to the subway. But, there are future prospects to connect them; and once they are connected, transportation in Gwangju will be further friendly.
