Sanbanggulsa Grotto, Jeju

Sanbanggulsa Grotto, Jeju is another important sightseeing attraction of Jeju. An interesting legend is associated with the formation of Sanbanggulsa Grotto, Jeju. The story goes that the peak of Mt.Hallasan where Baekrokho Lake now exists was at one point of time broken off by some famous mythical character and thrown away. This myth also serves as the reason that unlike other mountains on Jejudo Island, this mountain does not have a crater. This area then became Mt. Sanbangsan.

There is a 5 meter high rock cave at the cliff on the southwestern side of the mountain. It was originally called Sanbanggul Cave. It is now called a temple. It is one of the world’s famous Buddhist shrines. It dates back to the same period as Bulguksa Temple. Here you would also find the statues of Bodhisattvas and other guardian deities and the central statue is that of Buddha. The position of the statue is such that you would find it gazing over the forested hills and across the East Sea to the horizon. You cannot but help appreciating the granite dome of Seokuram which is an amazing architectural feat. The statues of the Buddha and the other deities which are almost life-like, reflect the expertise of the craftsmen who lived at that time. In the year 1995 this Sanbanggulsa Grotto, Jeju was added to the list of UNESCO’S World Heritage Sites. This temple is visited by not only the Buddhist pilgrims but also tourists from other countries of the world.

The Sanbanggul Cave on the Sanbanggulsa Grotto, Jeju is the place where monk Hye-II had lived during the Goryeo Dynasty. Once you are inside the cave you can see the Marado Island and the Dragon Head Coast. You can also find here small ponds which are made of water drops that fall from the ceiling of the cave throughout the year. There is a plant zone on a cliff on Mt Sanbangsan near the Seokguram Grotto in Jeju. It is the only place in Jejudo Island where you can find boxwoods.

All these interesting attractions make this Sanbanggulsa Grotto, Jeju an important tourist spot of Jeju.
