Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak, Jeju

The Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak is a land mass that rose from under sea as a result of a volcanic eruption about 100,000 years ago. You would find the Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak, Jeju located on the eastern end of Jejudo Island and the best feature of this is a huge crater. This crater is about 600 meters in diameter and the height is 90 meters. It is enlisted as one of the top ten scenic spots of Jeju Island.

The best features of the Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak in Jeju are the 99 sharp rocks that surround the crater. These give the crater the shape of a gigantic crown. Both the south east and the northern sides of the crater are steep because of the cliffs. However, on the western side you would find grass growing on its ridgeline. This western ridge is connected to the Seongsan Village. If you love to walk or go for horse riding then no other place in Jeju is better than this place. You can walk or do horse riding only on this western ridge. This famous sightseeing attraction of Jeju is excellent as the rapeseed flowers bloom in the spring. Watching this peak covered with fully blossomed brightly colored flowers is itself a tourist attraction.

Another famous activity that takes place everyday at Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak is watching the sunrise from the crater. This activity has become famous as Seongsan Sunrise Festival since 1994. It attracts lots of tourists for three days starting from December 31 tol January 2, every year. During this festival, as time moves towards the midnight on December 31, people surround the performance stage, set up at Seongsan Sunrise Peak. For celebrating the New Year, a torchlight show, a campfire and fireworks are set. Another important aspect of this festival is a traditional ritual called gut. As soon as the sun of the New Year rises, a golden tape is cut. The visitors are also entertained with various types of performances held on the performance stage. Other events that are held here include a mounted police parade, a mandarin orange eating contest and a ‘pungmul’ performance.
