Being one of the most famed Jeonju tourist attractions, Gyeonggijeon Shrine, Jeonju is visited by a considerable amount of tourists. The Gyeonggijeon Shrine in Jeonju was constructed in 1410. It harbors the portrait of King Tae-jo Lee who was the Founding Father of the Joseon Dynasty. The tombs of the King and his wife are shrined in this place at Jogyeong Shrine.
The structure of the Gyeonggijeon Shrine, Jeonju was demolished to some extent during the attack of the foreign powers from the year 1592 to that of 1598. The remaining part of the shrine was refurbished and renovated in the year 1614.
Apart from the portrait of King Tae-jo Lee, the Gyeonggijeon Shrine, Jeonju also harbors the portraits of some other kings and royal figures. To name those kings, they are Cheol-jong, Sun-jong, Yeong-jo and many others.
The shrine also features the coach or the carriage which was used to carry the slabs on which the epitaphs were engraved. The other carriages which were used to bring the influential and eminent personalities of the society can also be noted here. The carriages which resemble chairs to carry a particular individual are also kept on display in the Gyeonggijeon Shrine, Jeonju.
Jeonju Sago which embodies the conservation of the local tradition and culture can be seen in here. The two-storied Sillokgak has a marvelous architecture. The stone monument or the Hamabi is a prominent structure to be viewed here.
At present, the Gyeonggijeon Shrine, Jeonju has turned out to be a famous and marvelous place, where television shows portraying the tradition and custom of the region are recorded. The shrine has been used as the backdrop for the popular television drama series “Tears of Dragon”.
When you enter through the main gate, you will notice a resting area on the right side of the gate. The senior citizens in the region can be seen gathering together to spend their leisure hours by playing Korean Chess and making stakes for coffee, tobacco and alcohol.
