Changdeok-gung, Seoul is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Seoul. The capital and the largest city of South Korea, the land of Seoul is specked with a number of places for sightseeing. The Changdeok-gung, Seoul in South Korea is one such place that is definitely worth a visit.

Literally meaning the Palace of Prospering Virtue, Changdeok-gung, Seoul is a magnificent palace positioned within a large park in the city. It is one of the well-known Five Grand Palaces constructed by the kings of the Joseon Dynasty. The palace being situated in the east of Gyeongbok Palace, it is also called East Palace.

For a number of Joseon Dynasty kings, Changdeok-gung, Seoul was a special palace. They preserved several Korean elements that date back to the period of Three Kingdoms of Korea. The structure of the palace merges excellently with the topography of the site, which is a unique Korean element.

It was in the year 1405 when the construction of the Changdeok-gung, Seoul commenced. It was completed in the year 1412, during the rule of King Taejong. The palace grounds were extended by about 500,000 square meters by Donwhamun King Seonjo. During the Japanese invasion in the year 1592 the Changdeok-gung in Seoul was completely burnt. Later, in the year 1609, the palace was rebuilt by King Seonjo and King Gwanghaegun.

Until the year 1872, the Changdeok-gung, Seoul was the seat of government and the site of the royal court. Emperor Sunjong, the last Emperor of Korea, lived in this grand palace until his death in the year 1926. At present, you can witness 13 buildings on the palace grounds and 28 pavilions in the gardens of Changdeok-gung. The buildings and the pavilions collectively sprawls over 45 hectares.

In the year 1997, Changdeok-gung, Seoul was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage site. During the 2000s, certain parts of the palace were used for filming the famous Korean Drama Dae Jang Geum.
