World Heritage Sites in South Korea

Bulguksa

Bulguksa is a Buddhist temple located in the North Gyeongsang province in South Korea. There are seven National treasures of the country that are found here, which includes Dabotap and Seokgatap stone pagodas as well as Cheongun-gyo or the blue cloud bridge and two statue of Buddha in bronze. Bulguksa got the approval as a UNESO World Heritage List along with Seokguram Grotto, situatd four kilometers to its east. It is masterpiece of Buddhist art during the Silla Kingdom. Bulguksa is the head temple of the 11th district of the Jogye Order of Buddhism in Korea.

Changdeokgung

This is a palace which is set in a large park in Seoul. This palace is among the five palaces that were built by the kings of Joseon Dynasty. It has many Korean element in its construction.

Jongmyo Shrine

The Jongmyo Shrine got the listing in UNESCO world heritage site in 1995. It is situated in Seol and it is dedicated to the spririts of the ancestors belonging to the royal famuly of JOseon Dynasty. Theshrine has a good influence of COnfusian tradion.Every year, a grand performance of ancient corut music is performed here.

Tripitaka Koreana and Haeinsa

Haeinsa is a large temple in the south province of Gyeongsang. Built in the year 802, it has the Tripitaka Koreana woodworks. The work was started in 1236 and ended in 1251.

Hwaseong

Hwaseong is the fortification of the city of Suwon which is in the south of Seoul. The fortification as all the latest features known at that time and was completed in 1796. There are both flat land and hilly terrain in the fortress and the walls are 5.52 km long with41 extant facilities along the perimeter.

Gochang, Hwasun and Ganghwa sites

These sites were added to the UNESCO listing in 2000. There are prehistoric graveyards with hundreds of different megaliths. These megaliths were made in the 1st century BC from large blocks of rock.

Gyeongju Area

This historic area was added to the UNESCO World Heritage in 2000. One can see the tomb of Sila rulers in the center of the city. The tombs have taken the shape like that of pyramids.

Complex of Goguryeo Tombs

These tombs lie in Pyongyang. It became a World Heritage Site in July 2004.
