In Spanish culture and tradition 'Virgin Begona' is worshiped as a patron or follower of God. Basilica is a place which is devoted to her. The formation of Basilica started in the 16th century. This place had to undergo many changes since then. During 19th century, bombs were planted near the doors of Basilica, due to which several parts of the construction were destroyed. Sancho Martinez de Arego was the designer of this construction.
The artwork of Virgin Mary is engraved on this building. The front wall is a piece which depicts the Gothic style. There were many towers and beautiful artworks in the exterior of Basilica but it was unfortunately damaged during the Carlista War in the year 1835.
The front wall and structure were then rebuilt in the year 1907. There is a clock with 24 bells, which is imported from Switzerland. The bells are very heavy and sound very melodious.
The Basilica is considered as a place for celebrating Festivals. On the 15th of August ad 11th of October every year, main festivals are celebrated in the Basilica of Begona. It is considered as the day of Begona. Masses are carried out on the occasion and all citizens and tourists in Bilbao visit the Basilica de Begona to worship the virgin de Begona.
