Cason del Buen Retiro

Madrid City located in the center of the Iberian Peninsula has a population of approximately three million. It is a cosmopolitan city and the head quarter for many government offices. It is the home for the Royal family and a business center too. The city has got industries like textile, food and metal, which are situated in the southern side of the city. The building of the Cason del Buen Retiro, which was constructed in 17th century is located nearer to the Prado Museum. It was a part of Buen Retiro Palace, which was used by the then king Philip IV .It was used more like a ballroom and lectures used to be given here. This building now belongs to Prado Museum.

The paintings done by a painter named Lucas Jordan can be seen on the ceiling even today. Those paintings are a tribute to the Spanish monarchy. This has been turned into an art gallery and 19th and 20th century paintings are exhibited here now.The works by famous people, Sorolla and Rusinol are exhibited here with some of the other 19th century paintings and sculptures. This complex is restored in such a way that it can accommodate the 17th and 19th century Spanish art.

This building contains a dome that belongs to the 18th century on which an attractive painting was done by Lucas Jordan. This part of the museum is the home for the paintings of the artists like Madrazo, Fortuny, Rosales and Picasso, who were from the 19th century.Earlier, this part of the museum was the home for Picasso's famous painting "Guernica". Picasso wanted the painting to be displayed here because it was the city's famous museum. But later the painting was removed from here to be displayed in another new museum, which is called Reina Sofia.

El Prado Museum, to which the Cason del Buen Retiro belongs, is a largest art gallery. It is renowned and one of the largest galleries in the world. It is a home for many sculptures, drawings, coins and some other art works. It contains a huge collection of paintings, which made this museum popular worldwide. This museum stores more than 8,600 paintings out if which, only less than 2000 paintings could be displayed. This is because of the lack of space.During the ruling of the king Charles III, the concept of the museum was thought of. But it could be acted upon only during the reign of Fernando VII, which was in the 19th century. From that time to this date the works have been transferred many times to other places and finally after the second civil war they have been returned to Madrid.

The adjacent buildings of the Cason del Buen Retiro and the Prado Museum (Villanueva) are treasure coves for numerous art works done by renowned artists.
