Transportation in Madrid

Madrid is the capital and the largest city in Spain. It is located in the Iberian Peninsula. The city is famous for its museums, historical landmarks, and active street life and out door cafes. Madrid is the main administrative, financial and transportation center of Spain. Transportation in Madrid is very easy with its extensive and effective transport system.     The Metro System:
    The metro or Subway is the fastest, safe, clean and cheap way of Transportation in Madrid. It not only connects suburbs with the city but runs within the city also. The metro operates round the clock with frequent services between stations. There are self-service ticket machines in the metro stations that are easy to use. This subway is a convenient way to travel to and from the airport. Madrid has also long distance trains of high speed to all parts in Spain. These trains are the most comfortable means of transport and one can view the best scenery enroute the journey. All the railways in Madrid are run by RENFE National Railway Company. The main railway stations of Madrid are Atocha station and Chamartin.

    Bus:
    Buses in Madrid are red in color and they are safe, neat and air-conditioned. They run between 6.00 am and 11.00pm and with a frequency of ten minutes. There are buses at night and they are known as “Buhos” that means owls. The night buses run along 20 different routes. There are also Double Decker buses for a round trip. There are long distance buses that are fitted with many comforts. On longer routes there are snacks provided during the journey, the rates are however high in these services.

    Taxis:
    Compared to other European countries taxis are cheaper in Madrid. Taxis are available at all hours and they are white in color with a red stripe and a Madrid flag symbol. Prices are reasonable and it is the best and the quickest means of transport in the city. There are many car rental companies that offer good rates. Booking through these companies is safer and also give the privilege of discounts on many occasions. Chauffeured luxury cars are also available here, which accommodate large families.

    Air service:
    The airport in Madrid is Barajas and it is one of Europe’s largest airports. Low cost flights also furnish services to this city. Some of the famous aircrafts are Easyjet, Virgin express and Air Berlin that offer flights to many destinations. Airplanes are the fastest means of transportation but may be slightly expensive.
