Gibralfaro Castle, Malaga is one of the interesting tourist destinations in Malaga. It is situated on the highest part of the hill located in the city center. It is present above the Alcazaba. It is connected to the Alcazaba at the eastern end through coracha. It was constructed by the Muslim King, Yusuf during the 14th and 15th century. It was built on the site of a Phoenician lighthouse namely Yabal-Faruk. It means 'the lighthouse on the mountain'.
Gibralfaro Castle, Malaga was built as a fortress to protect the Alcazaba. It is a strong fortress having double enclosures. In old days, it was a reservoir for the supply of a garrison of about 5,000 men. It includes the protective devices such as a large flanking tower, an angled gateway and a rampart perimeter developed from the terrain. In old days, there was a mosque within the ramparts. Later, it was converted to the Christian church.
There is the Airon well of Arabic origin about 40 meters deep. It is mentioned in the historical records too. There are also baker's ovens, cistern wells, lookout small towers and the building of an ancient powder magazine. There is an exhibition in the place of the gunpowder armory. It gives the information about the uses of castle as a military garrison and coastal elevated post from 1487 to 1925. There is also a display of weapons, plans, uniforms and objects in the routine life.
In summer, it is open from 9 am to 8 pm. In winter, it is open from 9 am to 6 pm. It is closed on Tuesday.
