Antigua Fabrica de Tabacos was formerly a huge, ancient tobacco factory. It can be easily located on the route to the Plaza de España. Even in those days the Antigua Fabrica de Tabacos was progressive as the factory took care of the needs of its workers by providing a childcare centre and nursery for the workers’ children. The 400 mules had stables of their own.
Even its criminals were housed in its own jail. It formed a setting for Bizet’s opera and was used as a workplace by the beautiful and ostentatious Carmen. Today it occupies a place of respect as part of the prestigious Seville University. It is thrown open to the tourists during day time.
