The KLM stands for Koninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij. It is a subsidiary of Air France-KLM having its main port in Amsterdam, Schiphol Airport. It is Europe’s largest airline company. The KLM and Air-France operate as independent carriers from its respective hubs in Amsterdam and Paris. It has a fleet of about 565 aircrafts. More than 175 planes and 50 used by the City hopper regional operations are operated by KLM Royal Dutch Airlines.
The KLM airline was founded on 7th, October 1919. The first KLM flight flew on 17th, May 1920, from Amsterdam to London. It carried two English journalists. In the year 1921, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines started its regular scheduled services. They started offering flights to Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Paris, London, Brussels, Bremen, Malmo and Copenhagen. Initially it used Fokker F2 & F3 planes.
Using Fokker F7-B, KLM started the intercontinental service to Netherlands East Indies. In the year 1924, Fokker F7 Callsign NACC made the first non-scheduled flight. In December 1934, the first transatlantic KLM route was between Amsterdam and Curacao using the Fokker F-XVII “Snip”. A scheduled flight between Amsterdam and New York was launched on 21st, May 1946. On 1st, November 1958, the first polar route was started between Amsterdam and Japan. Thus, it is an airline covering many parts of the world.
The KLM offers both Economy and Business Class services on the intra-Europe code share flights. It also provides the Economy Class and World Business Class in the international flights. There is a generous personal space, enhanced seat recline and expanded legroom in the World Business Class. The seat recline is enhanced by the adjustable leg rest. World-renowned chefs design the menus for the customers. Some of the world’s unique wine and exceptional champagnes are provided with the special menus. A wide variety of magazines and newspapers along with the digital telephone facility are available in the aircrafts.
KLM is the fourth largest airline in Europe. It gives international and regional European service from its hub. KLM cityhopper, KLM excel and KL codes are the affiliates of KLM. The code share services to the cities of Europe, Middle East and Africa are given by the extensive alliance of Continental and KLM from the Amsterdam hub of which Northwest is also a member.
The network of KLM has reached more than 350 destinations in the 80 countries. It owns 26% of Kenya Airways and also low-cost buzz. The Dutch government owns 14% of KLM and it ranks seventh among the 200 IATA member-air-lines.
KLM Royal Dutch Airline is one of the oldest and reputed airlines. The Airbus 330-200, Boeing 737-300/400/800/900, 747-400, 767-300ER, MD-11 and 777-200 is the fleet available in KLM. The KLM city hopper operates fleets of Fokker 50/70/100 series jet and turboprop aircraft. Air France and KLM has expanded their network by becoming members of the SkyTeam marketing alliance.
