LohaPrasada, Anuradhapura is located between Ruvaneliseya and Sri Mahabodiya in Anuradhapura, the ancient city in Sri Lanka.. LohaPrasada, Anuradhapura is popularly known as the Brazen Palace or LohaPrasada, Anuradhapura is presently in the picturesque ruins and was a major place of Sri Lankan civilization. In the ancient times, the Palace included the refectory as well as the Uposathagara or the Uposhatha House.
LohaPrasada in Anuradhapura is situated in the vicinity of the Sacred Bo Tree and is one of the most visited site in Anuradhapura. The structure in earlier times happens to be a Simamalake for the Sangha to assemble on Poya days and recite the formula of the confessional. The structure was constructed by King Devanampiya Tissa during 250 - 210 BC. The Palace is described as an edifice consisting of nine storey. One side of the LohaPrasada was of 400 ft or 120 meter in length. Presently, some of the pillars were turned upside down or completely removed from their position, while restoration work was going on in the beginning of the 20th century. The building has roof covered with bronze and got the name Brazen Palace. A total of 1600 monolithic stone pillars were used to build the structure with 40 pillars in 40 rows. The Palace took about 6 years to build and the plan was thought to be brought from heaven. The Palace was raged down during the rule of King Saddhatissa.
Legend has it that Anuradhapura was first established by Anuradha, who was a follower of Prince Vijaya, the founder of the Sinhala race. It became the capital about 380 BC by King Pandu Kabhaya. During the reign of King Devanampiya Tissa that Arahat Mahindra, who was the son of the great Emperor Asoka, took a group of missionaries from the northern part of India to Sri Lanka. He settled in caves and helped in the spread of the new religion.
