Built under Mahasena in the 3rd century AD, this structures forma an eminent spot for tourists. Mahasena was a practitioner of the Sagaliya sect of the Buddhist community. It was in support of this sect and also to display power, that this monument was built. However, it was considered as opposing the conventional and accomplished order of Mahavira. Over the years, this marvelous structure has witnessed several restorations.
The site of the shrine was earlier referred to as Nandana Pleasure Grove. It was later when this place got its title of 'Jotivana' which was derived from Pali. It was in this spot where Mahinda, the Buddhist Saint advocated the aspects and spirit of Lord Buddha's precepts and, principles of Buddhism.
Originally, The Jetavana Dagaba, Anuradhapura featured an altitude of 400 feet and was the third largest structure in the world during that period. The two colossal buildings were constructed two thousand years back. At present, visitors will notice a solid foundation on which this structure was built. The base made of brick measures 26 feet in depth. The diameter is 367 feet and the entire structure is based on a square shaped base with an area of eight acres.
Within this stupa one can find some fifteen slots of buildings, an alms hall and various image houses. This amazing mound-like structure was later entitled as a World Heritage Site.
