Built during the reign of King Devanampiya Tissa in 1840's, Thuparama Dagaba in Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka is said to hold sacred the collar bone of Gautama Buddha. The shrine is a good example of the artistic excellence and architectural splendor of the land. Originally the shrine was constructed in the shape of a heap of paddy. It was at the time of the rule of King Agbo II, when the shrine was totally ruined and was regained too. After that it has undergone several refurbishments and renovations.

At present, the diameter of the structure near the base is 59 feet. The height of the dome from the ground measures 11 feet 4 inches with a diameter of about 164 feet. It forms one of the most visited tourist attractions in Anuradhapura.

Painted in white color, the shape and structure of this shrine resembles that of a bell. The area within the complex of this shrine is done with granite. Tourists can get to view two rows of pillars made of stone encircling the shrine. The magnificent and majestic pillars around this shrine once bore the circle-shaped roof. This made it a Vata Dage which is a typical Sinhalese structure. Owing to its marvelous structure and historic significance this shrine stands out among the other Anuradhapura Tourist Attractions.
