Approximately 13 km from Anuradhapura lays the sacred mountain of Mihintale, which is the site of introduction of Buddhism to Sri Lanka in 247 BC. The first flora and fauna of the world was set up in the 3rd century B.C. At Mihintale, the tourist from across the world go in to see the peak of the Mihintale Mountain which has many lodgings for monks, temples along with, many beautiful statues of Lord Buddha. This peak can be accessed by a grand stairway which comprises 1840 steps made out of granite.

You can also plan a trip to Awkana which is situated about 51 km to the southeast of Anuradhapura. This place is known for its famous for 12 meters tall statue of Buddha made out of solid granite rock. The huge statue of Buddha built during the tenure of King Dhatusena during the fifth century A.D. sees Buddha standing on a lotus petal.

The travelers also plan a trip to Ritigala which is placed approximately 40km to the southeastern part of Anuradhapura. The top of the Ritigala Mountain is a strict nature reserve where the visitor can walk up the Meditational Pathways which are winding in nature but offering the most scenic view of the ancient city of Anuradhapura to reach the various levels of the mountain and its Meditational Platforms.
