You will be mesmerized by the natural beauty of the Horton Plains, Beregala. Approximately spread over10, 000 hectares, the Horton Plains, Beregala is the highest plateau in the country. The Horton Plains National Park is in the highlands of the country belonging to central province. The Horton Plains, Beregala was declared as a National Park in the year 1988.
The Horton Plains, Beregala consists of montane cloud forests embedded in wet montane grasslands. Horton Plains has a rich biodiversity. Most of the fauna and flora found in the park are endemic moreover some of them are confined only to highlands of the island. The Horton Plains is dominated by Calophyllum, Syzygium, Giant tree fern Cyathea and colorful Rhododrendron. The park is also famous for beautiful flowers of endemic Nellu, Bovitiya, Binara and many other orchid species. Endemic dwarf Bamboo dominates the edges of the river while Chrysopogon zeylanicum and Garnotia mutica dominate the grasslands.
To the tourists, nature walk in Horton Plains Nature Reserve is very popular. In the Horton Plains, Beregala you will come across Elk, Deer, Giant Squirrel, Wild Boar, Wild Hare,Porcupine, and a variety of Migratory birds, which are unique to this region. There are 16 Leopards in Horton Plains. If you are very lucky you may get a glimpse of a Leopard during your travel in the Horton Plains. The total distance of trekking in side the park is approximately of 6 kilometers.
