Among the couple of museums in the city, the Colombo National Museum is the more famous one. This museum is without any doubt the largest museum in the country. The museum has the private collection of H. C. P. Bell, Huga Nevil, as well as collection of Henry Blake and W. A. De Silva’s palm leaf manuscripts, and so on. A visit to the museum will give you an insight to the rich culture and history of the country.

If you have decided to drive down to the Colombo National Museum, it is not much of a problem. From Colombo Fort, drive down to the Kollupitiya Junction along the Galle road. After reaching the junction, turn to the left to Dharmapala Mawatha. From there, drive down to Viharamahadevi Park and take a right turn at the traffic circle. The museum is to be found within a kilometer along the Albert Crescent.

The Colombo National Museum was built in the year 1887 by Sir William Gregory, the British Governor. The impressive white building of the museum speaks for its superior architectural works. At the entrance of the Colombo National Museum, there is a limestone statue of Buddha. Near the staircase of the museum, there are two carvings that date back to the 12th century. The museum remains open from 9 am to 5 pm. The museum is closed on the Fridays and the government holidays. At the entrance of Colombo National Museum, you can buy cheap postcards from the two bookshops.
