The Sapumal Foundation, Colombo is a travel destination which is frequented by contemporary art lovers. What attracts these innumerable lovers of art works is the aspect that The Sapumal Foundation, Colombo was home to Harry Pieris, a famous artist belonging to the early 1900s.

As you visit Sapumal Foundation in Colombo, you can see a galore of Pieris’ artistic works along with few remnants of his actual life. Often considered as one of the most visited tourist attractions in Colombo, it also features a separate house where the late Harry Pieris lived and worked. The untouched studio at one corner of the Foundation building still has the artists’ easel, brushes, palate and color tubes, just the way he left it.

The Sapumal Foundation was basically built to promote modern art in Sri Lanka. It mainly features the works of art members belonging to the ‘43 groups’, one of the core groups that worked for the promotion of modern art in the country. Other that that the Sri Lankan artists whose works are showcased here are Ranil Deraniyagala, Tilak Samarawickreme, Marie Alles Fernando, Swanee Jayawardena, Sushila Fernando, Sevali Illangasinghe, Noeline Fernando, Badugodahewa and Nadine David.

The 200 paintings exhibited at The Sapumal Foundation in Colombo also features the works of artists from across the world including Richard Gabriel, Ivan Peries, Justin Deraniyagala, George Keyt, L.T.P. Manjusri, Geoffery Beling, George Claessen and Aubrey Collette.

The premises of The Sapumal Foundation, Colombo also houses a sale gallery where one can buy the works of few of the famous artists and painters from across the country. This has helped in spreading modern art across the country and allowing it to be within easy access of the common masses.

The Sapumal Foundation, Colombo also houses a print studio where you can learn the tricks of modern art. One can also avail special classes which are held here in regular intervals. Interested tourists can visit the Foundation between Saturday and Thursday. The timings for The Sapumal Foundation, Colombo are 10:00am to 1:00pm.
