History
Civilization in Dambulla is believed to have begun in the 3rd Century BC. However, the statues and paintings in the caves stand the testimony of time. They belong to the 1st Century BC. History has it that the caves were a shelter to King Valagam Bahu, when he was sent into a 14-year exile by Anuradhapura. The Buddists monks who medicated in these caves provided protection to the king here. On his return to his kingdom, King Valagam Bahu constructed a beautiful rock temple here as his appreciation to the monks. It was in the 11th, 12th,18th century AD that most of these statues and paintings were touched upon.

Places of visit
Caves Dambulla Tourism offers its tourists more than 80 caves to visit. These were primarily occupied by monks, who used to meditate there. You will filled with awe as observe the Buddhist statues and frescos. There are also statues of Hindu gods, such as of Ganesh and Vishnu. The caves worth mentioning are:

Another place of visit is the mountain range, Rose Quartz Mountain. This range is considered to be 500 million years old. The Quartz that is found here are rose, violet, white in color.

Transportation
